Downloading songs, movies and software from the Internet is still a time-consuming process. Even today with the high-speed broadband connections, it still takes long to download a large video files or a software. Imagine how would it feel if there is a power cut or the Internet connection simply gets disconnected at 99% download. Pretty bad isn’t it. Now you have to download the whole file again.

And for those with slower Internet connections, it is very frustrating to download a large file because it takes so much time. But there is something that can help in this situations. They are pieces of software which are popularly known as “download managers”. A download manager is a software which accelerates the rate of download decreasing the time needed to download a file and also keeps saving them from time to time so that you don’t have too download the whole thing in case it gets disconnected. There are many free such software will do the work well, though most of them has nagging ads prompting you to buy the commercial version again and again. And then there are commercial versions, which cost a little money but well worth it, especially if you have a slow Internet connection.
A download manager speeds up the rate of download by finding alternate sources of the file you are downloading (technically called mirror) and simultaneously downloading from the principal and alternate sources to speed up the download. Sometimes they used other technologies like data compression the speed of the download. Also, the download manager saves the downloaded file in parts from time to time. So, if the connection gets disconnected you still have the parts of the file you have downloaded in your PC and when you reconnect, with just have to download the part left. You can save a lot of time with download managers and also a lot of precious bandwidth. It is also to be noted that download managers are unable to accelerate downloads in cases of filesharing sites because they do not have any alternate source of the file.
So what are some could download managers available out there? There are a lot of good freeware download managers available on the net. But a problem with freeware download managers is that they are most of the time filled with ads. Still they are free to use anyway. In my opinion, Flashget is a very good and small download manager with gives good acceleration and is somewhat controlled in term of nagging ads. Download accelerator Plus is also very good and has a free alternative but the ads are too much for me to bear. If you want to go commercial, I would not suggest Download accelerator Plus though. If you really are willing to pay for a download manager, your best bet is Internet Download Manager. The software has no free alternative but you can try out the trial version. As for my experience, this is the absolute best download manager available and really boosts the speed of downloads by leaps and bounds. All of the software have the ability to integrate with popular browsers like Internet Explorer and Mozilla Firefox and you downloads automatically handed over to the download managers. If you are a regular Internet users you must have download manager, whether it’s free or commercial. It helps a lot.
